The stranger who changed how I see my height

Height insecurity. Whether you’re “too tall” or “too short,” feeling like you don’t fit the societal ideal can be surprisingly impactful. For years, I felt self-conscious about being “too short.” Always the shortest in photos, often overlooked in crowds, constantly feeling like I was looking up at the world. Then, a chance encounter with a stranger shifted my perspective.

I was at a concert, struggling to see over the crowd, feeling frustrated and acutely aware of my lack of height. A woman next to me, noticing my struggle, smiled and said, “Don’t worry, short people have the best view of the stage – we’re closer to the action!” It was a simple, throwaway comment, but it landed with unexpected force.

It was a reframe. A humorous, positive spin on something I’d always seen as a negative. It was a reminder that perspective is everything, and that even perceived “flaws” can be viewed as strengths. That stranger’s comment didn’t magically make me taller, but it did make me see my height in acompletely new light. My “shortness” stopped being a source of insecurity and became, surprisingly, a source of amusement and even a bit of pride. Sometimes, all it takes is a kind word from a stranger to change how you see yourself. Your height, whatever it is, is just right. Own it.
