Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 vs S9 Plus vs S8: In-Depth Comparison

Samsung recently launched its latest flagship tablets – the Galaxy Tab S9 and Tab S9 Plus. I’ve been testing them extensively, including against the prior year’s Tab S8 models.

In this detailed comparison, I’ll examine the hardware, software, accessories, performance, battery life, and other key factors across these devices. Let’s dive in!

Unboxing – What’s Included?

Here’s what comes in the box with both the Tab S9 and S9 Plus:

  • Galaxy Tab S9/S9 Plus tablet
  • S Pen stylus
  • USB-C cable
  • SIM ejector tool
  • Quick start guide

Notable omissions are the wall charger and headphone jack adapter. But the included cable supports 45W fast charging if you supply the charger.

I’ll leave an affiliate link below to Samsung’s 45W charger which perfectly complements these tablets.

Design and Physical Differences

Let’s examine how the Tab S9 models differ from the Tab S8 series in terms of industrial design:

Dimensions:

  • Tab S9 – 253.8 x 165.3 x 6.3mm
  • Tab S8 – 253.8 x 165.3 x 6.3mm
  • Tab S9 Plus – 285 x 185 x 5.7mm
  • Tab S8 Plus – 285 x 185 x 5.7mm

As you can see, the dimensions are identical to last year’s models. The Plus variants are obviously larger overall than the standard models.

Weight:

  • Tab S9 – 507g
  • Tab S8 – 567g
  • Tab S9 Plus – 572g
  • Tab S8 Plus – 567g

Very minor weight reductions on the Tab S9 and S9 Plus. Not very noticeable in real world usage.

Build:

  • Tab S9 line uses Armor Aluminum material featuring a flush, uniform finish. Feels very premium.
  • Tab S8 line has more of a textured finish and flat sides. Still high quality but not quite as sleek.

Buttons and Ports:

  • Identical left side mounted magnetic S Pen docking and charging
  • USB-C charging port, speakers, magnetic accessories connector, and SIM slot are the same locations.
  • Power and volume buttons on top edge are unchanged.

Overall, unless you closely inspect the texture, the new Tab S9 models look nearly identical to prior versions from a design standpoint. Excellent consistency and refinement of the aesthetic.

Next let’s compare the displays.

Display Comparison

Here are the key display specs:

Tab S9

  • 11″ LTPS LCD
  • 2560 x 1600 resolution (276ppi)
  • 120Hz refresh rate

Tab S8

  • 11″ LTPS LCD
  • 2560 x 1600 resolution (276ppi)
  • 120Hz refresh rate

Tab S9 Plus

  • 12.4″ Super AMOLED
  • 2800 x 1752 resolution (266ppi)
  • 120Hz refresh rate

Tab S8 Plus

  • 12.4″ Super AMOLED
  • 2800 x 1752 resolution (266ppi)
  • 120Hz refresh rate

As you can see, the screen sizes, resolutions, and refresh rates remain unchanged from the Tab S8 generation.

In real world usage, both the LCD Tab S9 and OLED Tab S9 Plus screens look gorgeous with crisp details and vibrant colors. I don’t notice any improvements versus the already excellent Tab S8 displays.

One subtle difference is the Tab S9’s LCD panel has slightly better outdoor visibility compared to the Tab S8’s LCD due to brightness boosting tech. But both are perfectly readable even in sunlight.

S Pen Comparison

The included S Pen stylus on the Galaxy Tab S9 series looks and functions identically to the previous generation.

Key specs like 4,096 pressure levels, 9ms latency, and wireless charging remain consistent. New software features are enabled through updates, not hardware changes.

Two minor differences:

  • The S Pen now has an IP68 water and dust resistance rating. Added peace of mind against accidents.
  • Stronger magnets firmly latch the S Pen to the side charging dock. Nice improvement with a satisfying snap feel.

But overall, if you already have an S Pen from another recent Galaxy tablet, you can use it interchangeably with the Tab S9 models. The S Pen experience is unchanged for note taking, drawing, and other creative work.

Cameras

Let’s compare the rear and front-facing camera hardware between generations.

Rear Camera

  • Tab S9 – 13MP
  • Tab S8 – 13MP
  • Tab S9 Plus – 13MP primary + 6MP ultra-wide
  • Tab S8 Plus – 13MP primary + 6MP ultra-wide

Identical rear cameras on the standard models. The Plus variants retain the same dual camera array too.

Don’t expect anything special from the rear cameras though – these tablets aren’t made for mobile photography. The cameras are purely for document scanning and other basic utility purposes.

Front Camera

  • Tab S9 – 12MP ultra-wide
  • Tab S8 – 12MP ultra-wide
  • Tab S9 Plus – 12MP ultra-wide + 12MP wide angle
  • Tab S8 Plus – 12MP ultra-wide + 12MP wide angle

Again, the front cameras remain the same between generations. Like the rear, they handle video calls acceptably but nothing outstanding.

The dual camera provides flexibility to adjust framing and utilize auto-tracking features during video calls. But the imaging quality is simply average – tablets don’t make great webcams.

While the hardware is unchanged, new software tuning provides marginal improvements to image processing. But the cameras aren’t a compelling reason to upgrade from the Tab S8 models.

Hardware Performance Comparison

One of the most important upgrades comes in the performance department. Here’s how the processors compare between generations:

Tab S9 and S9 Plus

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor
  • 8GB RAM
  • Up to 512GB storage

Tab S8 and S8 Plus

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor
  • 8GB RAM
  • Up to 512GB storage

As you can see, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the Tab S9 series is several generations newer than the 865+ in the Tab S8 line.

In benchmarks, this translates to 25-30% faster CPU and GPU performance on the Tab S9 models.

But how does it actually feel in real world use? Let’s compare some common tasks:

App Opening Speeds

The Tab S9 series opens apps instantly. Essentials like Chrome, Gmail, YouTube all pop open without delay. The Tab S8 models are also quick, just a hair slower.

Multitasking/Dex Performance

Samsung’s Dex interface enables desktop-like multitasking with multiple resizable windows. The Tab S9 flies through Dex use. Launching and switching between many apps is effortless. The Tab S8 models handle Dex nicely too but you may notice some occasional slow-downs with demanding multitasking.

Gaming Performance

Both generations handle mobile games flawlessly. Even graphics intensive titles maintain high, consistent frame rates on the Tab S9 and S8 series. Some newer games may get a slight performance boost on the Tab S9, but not very noticeable.

Video and Photo Editing

This is where you see the biggest gap. Editing high resolution photos and 4K video is noticeably snappier on the Tab S9 versus Tab S8. Complex edits render quicker and applying effects has less lag. The S8 models still get the job done well, just not as swiftly.

So in summary, the Tab S9 provides a real world speed increase thanks to its upgraded processor. But the Tab S8 series is no slouch either, delivering great performance for mobile productivity and entertainment. Power users who multitask heavily or work in creative apps most will benefit from the S9’s extra horsepower.

Software: Android 12 and One UI 4.1

The Galaxy Tab S9 series launches with the latest Android 12 operating system. On top is Samsung’s custom One UI 4.1 software.

One UI 4.1 adds some tablet-centric enhancements like:

  • Revamped Split Screen multitasking
  • New three column layout for more apps
  • Floating windows for pop-out media
  • Improved keyboard trackpad support
  • Better drag and drop between apps

These productivity-focused features make it easier to leverage the large tablet displays. One UI 4.1 remains fast and fluid in daily use.

The Tab S8 line is also slated to get the One UI 4.1 update soon. So both generations will provide the same great software experience.

No matter which you pick, you’ll have the most refined and desktop-like version of Android available on any tablet. Samsung knocks it out of the park on the software side.

Battery Life Comparison

With the same size batteries, the Tab S9 models deliver nearly identical battery life compared to the Tab S8 generation:

Galaxy Tab S9

  • 8,000 mAh battery
  • Around 14 hours of video or internet use

Galaxy Tab S8

  • 8,000 mAh battery
  • Around 14 hours of video or internet use

Galaxy Tab S9 Plus

  • 10,090 mAh battery
  • Around 16 hours of video or internet use

Galaxy Tab S8 Plus

  • 10,090 mAh battery
  • Around 16 hours of video or internet use

These estimates matched up closely with my real world testing. Both sizes provide all day battery life even with heavy use. Most people will easily go multiple days between charges.

Quick charging support remains the same too – you can recharge quickly using an optional 45W adapter.

If battery life is a concern, the Plus models provide those extra few hours for marathon sessions. But both sizes deliver excellent endurance overall.

Accessories Compatibility

A common question – do Tab S8 accessories work with the new Tab S9 models?

Unfortunately, direct compatibility is limited due to slightly different dimensions and magnet positions. Cases and keyboards are shaped and molded specifically for each generation’s size.

For example, the Book Cover Keyboard case fits precisely and attaches magnetically to each tablet. So the Tab S8 keyboard won’t fit the Tab S9 properly.

Same goes for cases. Third party accessory compatibility will also be limited.

However, these are cross-compatible:

  • S Pens – All modern Galaxy Tab S-series pens work interchangeably
  • Screen Protectors – Same dimensions means full compatibility
  • Bluetooth Accessories – Like mice, keyboards, headphones

So it’s hit or miss depending on the accessory type. Cases and keyboard covers won’t directly swap over. But S Pens and wireless accessories are cross-generational.

Closing Recommendation

The Galaxy Tab S9 and Tab S9 Plus deliver iterative but meaningful improvements over their excellent predecessors:

Reasons to Upgrade from Tab S8 Series

  • Faster overall performance
  • Productivity optimized One UI 4.1
  • Brighter display (LCD model only)

Reasons to Stick with Tab S8 Series

  • Nearly identical hardware and capabilities
  • Still very fast and responsive
  • Save money over new models

For casual users, the Tab S8 models retain outstanding value given their current discounted pricing. But professionals and power users will appreciate the snappier speeds of the Tab S9 series.
