Spotlight fear. The performance anxiety nightmare. Public speaking, presentations, even just being the center of attention in a small group – spotlight situations triggered intense anxiety. The fear of judgment, the pressure to perform, the sheer vulnerability of being “on stage” – it was paralyzing. Then, I decided to challenge my spotlight fear. To step into the spotlight, deliberately and repeatedly.
My strategy wasn’t about becoming a natural performer overnight, but about gradual exposure and reframing. Starting with small, low-stakes spotlight situations, practicing presentations in front of forgiving audiences, and consciously reframing “spotlight” as “opportunity” rather than “threat.” Gradual spotlight exposure lessened the fear, replaced by a growing sense of confidence and even, dare I say, enjoyment. Spotlight fear faded away, replaced by a newfound willingness to step into the center and shine. Fear of the spotlight is common. Challenge it, practice stepping into it, and realize that the spotlight can be an opportunity, not a threat.
